Note that only the panasonic can be heard, the others are digitals or
if they're in the clear you won't catch them because they are
spread-spectrum.  Some are both spead-spectrum and digital.

Channel 16 (distress and calling) will be quiet, except when 
pleasure boats are active.  Commercial vessels rarely use it except 
to make "safety" broacasts as they approach narrow channels, etc.

Commercial vessels will normally communicate with a Vessel Traffic 
Management Center, reporting their position and intentions at specified 
calling-in points.  Traffic will then tell them what other vessels they 
should expect to meet.

The channel usage marked with an asterisk (*) are from tables in Icom
IC-M2 and IC-M55 marine radio manuals, and are probably fairly "generic", 
and subject to change in different jurisdictions.  Other channel usage is 
from my station licence for the Canadian West Coast, and from things 
overheard on the air. "Your usage may vary."

Channels marked (CCG) or (USCG) are for Canadian or US Coast guard
authorized stations only.

Channel 70 is supposed to be reserved for a future selective calling
distress and safety system, but is (illegally) being used for intership
communications (even by the RCMP!)

The letters under "area" mean:
        I: International only (non-US) according to Icom
        C: Canadian usage
        A: American usage

Channels with an "A" suffix are simplex operation on the ship transmit
frequency of an international duplex channel.

Canada uses a "B" suffix to denote broadcast (one-way) use of the shore
transmit side of an international duplex channel.

There are no repeaters (as hams know them) in the marine service .  If you
are willing to pay for a phone call, the telco might let you place a call
to another vessel on the same (or different) channel, and so get the
effect
of a repeater.

I have been told that there isn't too much activity on any of the above ham bands as most amateurs listen to the universal calling frequencies: 146.520, 446.000, 224.000 etc. or the repeaters enroute.

How My Scanner Is Programmed:
Banks 1 through 5
Channel 01 is the Priority Channel. My scanner will automatically check this channel in between scanning each other channel. I set this to whichever channel I'm most interested in and turn on the PRIority feature. If I'm riding on the train, I usually set it to the channel being used by the Engineer and Conductor. This is also the channel of the Hot Box Detectors (HBD) along the Amtrak route. The Hot Boxes automatically check the speed of the train, the length of the train, the number of axels, and other conditions and then transmit this information using a synthesized voice as the train passes. 
Channels 02 through 97 programmed to correspond to AAR Channels 02 through 97.

HURRICANE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT
Hurricane reconnaissance aircraft (Hurricane Hunters) now use milsat to relay recon data to the National Hurricane Center. The following link can be used to retrieve the current data.

HURRICANE WATCH NET
Whenever a hurricane is within 300 miles of land in the northern western hemisphere, the Hurricane Watch Net is operational on 14325 kHz. The Hurricane Watch Net provides communication between amateur radio station WX4NHC located at the National Hurricane Center, and the affected areas.
